What to wear with braces?

Braces are more formal than belts, and so generally go with more formal wear, such as suits and dress skirts. However, that doesn’t exclude them from wearing braces with jeans, shorts, or khaki pants – they all need support!

Instead of describing the different looks, I think it’s better to just show photos of people who know how to wear their braces correctly.

Based on these looks, you can notice the trend of high-waisted pants or skirt, and a fitted shirt. You can also check out this helpful guide.

Discussion time:
  • How about you? What do you wear braces with?

    1. I always liked braces/suspenders but I never was brave enough to wear them myself. Until two years ago I discovered a pair of men´s pants with vintage striped braces in a second hand shop. I couldn´t resist and had to buy them. It was so exciting when I first wore these pants with the suspenders over a shirt in public and I enjoyed it very much. Since then I regularly wear high waist men´s pants with braces over a simple shirt/blouse and love this classic look. Suspenders have become my favorite accessory. I can´t live without them and fortunately my boyfriend likes to see me in suspenders, too!

      1. Bianca i can relate to your story 100%. I to become a lover of suspenders the same way you did and my boyfriend loves them to, if there on me or on him. And i would have to agree that they also have become my number 1 accessory and very rarely leave home without them.

    2. I wear braces with most of my trousers which are high waisted. I have been wearing braces for a number of years now as I much prefer the look and feel. I used to feel very embarressed about wearing braces, but not really sure why. Now I am much less self-conscious about them.

      1. Hi Bianca,
Do you wear Y back or X back suspenders? I own a pair of Y back suspenders and the feeling of putting them on is great, especially when you snap them! However, I still haven't overcome the embarassment of wearing them in the public. How do you overcome them? By the way, I'm from Malaysiaand nice to meet you.

      2. Hi bernard my name is rachael. you should never be embarassed wearing them. should never care what other people think. If you like them then you should wear them. alot of people do and if unsure what to wear them with look at google images for ideas. i work in a office with about 10 other women and about the same for men. everyone of them have worn them to work at least one day a week and they all look great. i would suggest to get over your fear dont wear anything to bright. for example black shoes black shirt or dark grey and black ( maybe with white pin stripe )braces/suspenders. go some where eg. Shopping mall or near alot of business people but not where you might know alot of people. once you start to wear them you will be more confident then let a friend or family member (female) see them on you. ask their opinion. then you should be ok fron there

      3. @Rachael: Good tip on getting over the nervousness of wearing braces. Wearing braces is like wearing a hat - it's a statement you make to people around you that you dress well. Wearing braces takes confidence. Once you start wearing them it will become more comfortable, and soon after it won't even think about it. Its also a novelty to be the only one in a room wearing braces. So try it out and you will be surprised at the complements you receive!

    4. I'm a woman that's loves the look and feel of a pair of braces. I am a pants girl and love my high waisted. A lot of my pants don't have belt loops so the only option is a pair of braces. I don't where any pairs that are to wide as I find the thinner pairs more suited to women. But I love wearing them and will for a long time

      1. Without belt loops, braces are the only option. Glad you love wearing braces!

    5. As a woman I feel your very limited to what you can wear with braces. You can wear a tie if your bold enough. Or even a scarf. I'm a pants girl so every outfit is either wide leg style or a pair of skinny jeans but what I wear on the bottom plays a big part of what style braces I wear. With jeans it's always a pair of skinny clip ones then for work it's button on style. But either way i love braces and will always keep wearing them

      1. I see a lot of women wearing braces with a neck bow, or simply no tie and just jewellery.

      2. I recently purchased a couple pairs of high waisted skirts that come with detachable braces. I had never worn braces til now and I like them alot. I'm going to get some buttons sewn onto my pants so I can wear the braces with them

    6. My wife has just started wearing braces and wears them with everything. She randomly said that she wanted to get a pair of braces so she went shopping and come home with several pairs. I think she looks great in them and hope she continues to wear them

    7. I recently got a pair of tuxedo pants that had buttons on the waistband for a pair of braces. I looked everywhere for a pair suitable to wear with my pants. I then found a pair of satin braces that suit the pants perfectly. It has become my favorite outfit and I'm always looking for a excuse to wear them

    8. I love wearing braces with my suits to work all the time and have always wondered what else can I wear with them. I have tried a bow, scarves and even some bold necklaces. There is this new girl at work who wears braces every now and then and when she does she always wears a tie with them. I think it looks good and have thought about wearing the same but everyone else in the office has labeled her gay and to masculine from her wearing a tie with the braces. I find it a bit unfair and wondered it that what they would say about me if I wore a tie. I really want to as I love the look of a tie paired with braces. Maybe others might have some suggestions

    9. Hi Sue, I think that for a lady, a shirt with the collar buttoned up without a tie looks neat and more feminine if you are wearing braces - in contrast, a tie can look a bit butch unless you are very feminine, and an open neck with braces can look a bit sloppy. Just my opinion, kind regards

    10. I am a big fan on wearing business attire and do most days especially to work. I absolutely love extremely wide leg pants also known as palazzo pants and have found braces look amazing with them. I wore my first pair of braces to a formal function that I hired a suit which I knew would look nice as I have seen women wearing braces regularly especially at my work. But I was unsure to if they would be comfortable or not .i was pleasantly surprised on how comfortable they were. I loved them so I went out and got my self several pair . All button on braces I think braces look so classy on men and especially women. I saw a picture of blake lively wearing a pair of really wide leg pants with braces and a tie. Some people might automatically think it would look butch but it wasn't. She looked amazing. The braces with wide leg pants were perfect so I decided that's the style I'm going to wear and I have. Braces are great and I'm going to continue wearing them for a long time
